In this project I explored the fundamentals of coordinate systems, spatial referencing, and GIS data creation. I downloaded facility-level data from the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) for South Carolina (2023), geolocated the data using latitude and longitude, and applied the correct datum (NAD 1983) to ensure spatial accuracy. I symbolized each facility based on the total on-site toxic release using graduated symbols to highlight spatial distribution and severity. The final map layout included a custom basemap, title, legend, and metadata, presenting a clear visual summary of industrial pollution across the state.
